Chinggis Khan

Chinggis Khan

Chinggis Khan was born as "Temujin" in 1165 to a Mongol tribe near the Burkhan Khaldun mountains and Onon and Kherlen rivers in modern day Mongolia. His father was Yesugei, leader for the Mongol tribes. Chinggis Khan had no concrete religion and chose to be shamanistic, but was not a tyrant about other people's religious choices.

Chinggis Khan was born to a large family and had three brothers, a sister, and two half-sisters. At the age of nine he was sent to live with his future arranged wife, Borte. He lived with them until the age of 12, and upon returning home, his father was poisoned, leaving Temujin to take up the position of leader. However, their tribe refused to be led by a boy so young, and left Temujin and his family unprotected. It was during this time that Chinggis Khan and his family were captured by the Bjartskular, a former ally of his father's in 1182. He was released with the help of the father of Chihauln, who would later become a general for Chinggis Khan. During his imprisonment, Chinggis also joined forces with his other two generals, Arslan and Jelme.

Kabul Khan, Chinggis' grandfather had begun the conquest for world domination when he conquered the Qin army, but after his death he could not hold the Mongol alliance together. Chinggis Khan continued his grandfather's legacy when he was renamed "Chinggis Khan" in 1206 and elected as the khagan (supreme ruler) of the Mongol tribes. His first target was China. He forced the ruler of the Tangut Kingdom in Xi-Xia of China to become a vassal to the khagan and pay tribute to him in 1207. He spared artisans and scholars to become his advisors, but massacred everyone else without mercy. Chinggis Khan established the capital of his empire at Karakorum. He was tolerant of all religions, and the legal code that he developed was aimed at ending divisions between clans and tribes. After Chinggis Khan's death in 1227, he split his lands between his three sons and grandson Batu, and then his son Ogedei was elected as the grand khan.

CLASS JOKE OF THE WEEK

A young student reported for a final examination that consisted of only true/false questions. The student took a seat in the hall, stared at the test for five minutes, removed a coin from his pocket and started tossing the coin and marking the answer sheet. Heads meant true, tails meant false. The young student finished the exam in 30 minutes, while the rest of the class was sweating it out. Suddenly, during the last few minutes, the young student began desperately throwing the coin and sweating profusely. The moderator, alarmed, approached the student and asked what was going on. "Well, I finished the exam in half an hour," said the student, "but I thought I ought to recheck my answers."

Hagia Sophia

The building above was constructed as a church between A.D. 532 and 537 by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. This marked both architectural and engineering improvements. Hagia Sophia, also known as the Church of the Holy Wisdom, was originally constructed in the fourth century by Constantine the Great. Then later between 532 and 537 was rebuilt under the supervision of Justinian. This beautiful monument still stands today but is no longer used as a church but as a museum for all to see.

ILKHAN EMPIRE

The Ilkhan Empire is one of the four regional khanates (subdivisions of the Mongol Empire) after the death of Chinggis Khan. The empire is located south of the Golden Horde and it eventually conquered much of the Abbasid Empire.
The Ilkhan Empire is the khanate (subdivision) of the south they claimed the task pf completing the conquest of the Muslim world that had begun with the invasion of the Khwarazm domains. Although the Islamic heartlands were never ultimately subdued.

Seljuk Turks

The Turks had a leading military towards the remaining era of the Abbasid empire. The Seljuk Turks were a nomadic group, and were classified as Sunnis. The powerful military took over Baghdad which was a huge accomplishment for the Turks.

A muslim house of worship. This consists of a minaret where the muezzin calls the people to prayer, and is a humble way for man to recreate pure divine presence on earth. But mosques are not built according to what is believed to be divine patterns, even if they are divinely guided, nor after very clear rules, except on some few points. It shall have a clear indication of the direction of Mecca.

Neopaganism

Neopaganism or Neo-Paganism is used to classify many of the modern religion movements that base their origins in the historical pre-Christian European "pagan" religions. Many neopagans practice a modernized version of their religion, while few try to accurately reconstruct or revive their indigenous, ethnic religions. These movements are extremely diverse and range from ploytheism, to animism, to pantheism.

Areas that Neopaganism is becoming popular include countries such as the United States, Britain, and Continental Europe. One of the more famous religions is Wicca (a nature-loving religion), but other religions that have found popularity are Neo-druidry, Germanic Neopaganism, and Slavic Neopaganism.

Tokugawa Japan

Tokugawa Leyasu was one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's vassals. As an ally, he built up a powerful domain on the Kanto plain. Leyasu emerged from the renewed warfare after Hideyoshi's death and concentrated on consolidating power at home, unlike Hideyoshi, who campaigned overseas. He was granted the title shogun in 1603 by the emperor. Under him, the remaining daimyos were reorganized. Most of the islands in central Honshu were controlled by the Tokugawa family. Over time, the estates of numerous vassal daimyos were reduced in size or broken up and absorbed by the Tokugawa family. Tokugawa's victory put a clear end to the civil wars and brought a resemblance of political unity to the islands of Japan.

Tang Dynasty

Following the Sui Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty was established in 618 c.e. and lasted until 907 c.e. Bringing forth many advances in trade, territory, and population, the Tang Dynasty was originated from the Li family, who gained their power after the fall of the Sui Dynasty. Having been estimated to have grown a population of 80 million people, the Tang territory extended and grew larger than the previous Han Dynasty. The Tang Empire was headed by the Buddhist and Confucian beliefs. The T'ang Empire only encountered a small conflict from the An Shi Rebellion.

Tang dynasty rebuilding the Bureaucracy:

To survive, they must rebuild and expand the imperial bureaucracy (Confusianism again)
The numbers of bureaucrats grew far past the Han, even their examination system was bigger than the Han's
They gave honor to those who passed (titles, dignitaries, social comforts)

Medina is the place of Muhammad's birth. In 622 the prophet Muhammad fled to Medina from Mecca in order to escape the envy the Umayyad people had developed from the popularity Islam was acquiring in Mecca. Muhammad was invited to come and live in Yathrib (the old name of Medina) and act as a sort of governor. He brought unity to the city of bickering tribes and clans. Muhammad gathered up many believers in Medina and returned to Mecca with his believers in 629.

Italian Renaissance

The renaissance first started in the 14th and 15th centuries. It challenged medieval intellectual values and styles. The Renaissance was built on a bigger political innovantion and on a comercialized economy. In the 15th century many famous artists made their works of art. Leonardo Da Vinci made realistic human art, Michelangelo applied classical styles of painting and sculpting. Machiavelli made is Greek and Roman examples.

In the Italian Renaissance humankind took a bigger focus on hummanism. Religious principles were no longer predominant but the church wasn't affected by this. In Italy Renaissance merchant became better at finding systems to help them manage there money. The political leaders didn't rely on heredity to take power but used what they can do to the state and help the people.

The Renaissance also helped the city-states make a more professional army to help with the wars that were common in city-states. The political leaders also helped the city-state by helping them advance the general well-being of the people to rise the cities glory. They also started to practice diplomacy. They also introduced the exchange of ambassadors for the first time in the west.

Buddhism

Buddhism started 2,500 years ago in India. The Holy book for Buddhism is the Tripitaka. The founder of Buddhism is Siddhartha Gautama. This religion believes in Reincarnation, that pain and suffering results in desire, providing equality, and the "Four Noble Truths", which are used to break the chain of suffering and reincarnation to reach Nirvana.
