Venice - Mr. Thomas' World History Class Like Florence, Venice was a Republic during the Renaissance, which controlled land in modern day Italy, much of the sea coast down the Adriatic and several islands. Because it had a thriving trade economy which survived the Black Death, much of the arts and architecture was preserved throughout its history.
