The United Kingdom is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of continental Europe.



Government: The UK is a constitutional monarchy: Queen Elizabeth II is head of state as well as of fifteen other Commonwealth countries, putting the UK in a personal union with those other states. The United Kingdom does not have a single legal system due to it being created by the political union of previously independent countries.

Language:
The UK does not have an official language, but the predominant spoken language is English that features a large number of borrowings from Old Norse, Norman French and Latin.

Religion:
Christianity is the major religion, followed by Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and then Judaism in terms of number of adherents.
Sport:
Major sports including association football, rugby football, cricket, tennis and golf originated in the United Kingdom. A 2006 poll found that football is the most popular sport in the United Kingdom.

Music:
Prominent among the UK contributors to the development of rock music in the 1960s and 1970s were The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Status Quo, Slade, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen, and Black Sabbath.
