The book is a series of stories in Arabic, considered to be among the classics of world literature. The plot is about the efforts of Scheherezade to keep her husband, King Shahryar , from killing her by entertaining him with a tale every night for 1,001 nights. Of these stories, the best known are those of Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor, and Aladdin.

Although many of the stories are set in India, their origins are unknown and have been the subject of investigation. The stories began to be collected about the year 1000. At first the title was only suggested of a large number of stories; later editors provided editions with the title of 1,001 tales. The present form of Thousand and One Nights is thought to be Persian , but includes stories from a number of different countries. Many of the stories are to harems.

The stories in The Thousand and One Nights describe the position of women in society during the Abbasid dynasty, telling about the irresistible lures and temptations of women. According to the stories, women needed to remain veiled and secluded so they wouldn't tempt men.
