Following the Sui Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty was established in 618 c.e. and lasted until 907 c.e. Bringing forth many advances in trade, territory, and population, the Tang Dynasty was originated from the Li family, who gained their power after the fall of the Sui Dynasty. Having been estimated to have grown a population of 80 million people, the Tang territory extended and grew larger than the previous Han Dynasty. The Tang Empire was headed by the Buddhist and Confucian beliefs. The T'ang Empire only encountered a small conflict from the An Shi Rebellion.


Tang dynasty rebuilding the Bureaucracy:
  1. To survive, they must rebuild and expand the imperial bureaucracy (Confusianism again)
  2. The numbers of bureaucrats grew far past the Han, even their examination system was bigger than the Han's
  3. They gave honor to those who passed (titles, dignitaries, social comforts)
  4. Birth and family connections could still help you get into universities
