Stalingrad - Mr. Thomas' World History Class Stalingrad, now Volgograd, was the scene for one of the bloodiest battles in human history from from 1942-1943. With over a million casualties and a disregard for both military and civilian lives on both sides, the Axis forces staged several campaigns to possess the city of Stalingrad. The battle led to the German retreat and final defeat at berlin by the red army 1945 after the defeat of the sixth army in Stalingrad.
