Siege of ConstantinopleThis is a featured page

Siege of ConstantinopleThere were at least 11 sieges of Constantinople during the history of the Byzantine Empire.

A siege is a military blockade of a city or fortress with the intent of conquering by assault. A siege occurs when an attacker encounters a city or fortress that cannot easily be taken and refuses to surrender. Sieges involve surrounding the desired target, and blocking any means of escape from the people inside, and preventing any supplies from being brought into the city, cutting off their food supply and if held long enough, crippling their economy through lack of trade. Having a city under siege is a very strong psychological warfare tactic that even the mightiest of cities will eventually succumb to defeat if the siege is not ended quickly.

The Second Arab Siege of Constantinople from 717-718 was a combined land and sea effort by the Arabs to take Constantinople. Maslama led the ground forces, and were defeated by Constantinople's impenetrable walls and Bulgarian attacks. The use of Greek Fire helped defeat the opposing naval fleet and what was left of the fleet was sunk in a storm during their retreat home.
