Sans-CulottesThis is a featured page

This term was used for the wealthier members (still poor in comparison to the nobles) of the Third Estate before the French Revolution. They were called this because they were speakers in the assembly, but chose to wear long pants rather than the knee-length culottes of the nobles. This signified their connection to the poor. The outfit that they normally wore was long trousers, a short-skirted coat, a red cap, and clogs. They supported the most radical left-wing factions in successive revolutionary governments. During the Reign of Terror they supported Maximilien Robespierre and the Commitee of Public Safety. However, the Sans-Culottes failed to be heard when it came to French politics.
