The proletariat comes from the Latin word, "offspring," that is used to represent a lower social class. A member of such class is known as a proletarian. They are usually identified as those people who have no wealth, or no means of production. This generally included those who recieved salaries or wages and worked for other people. Proletariat was usually used as an insulting term, until later when Karl Marx used this such word to refer to the working classes, becoming a more positive sociologic term.
