Oligarchy - Mr. Thomas' World History Class


An oligarchy is a government in which a small group of people exercise control, also known as "rule of the few." Power can be exercised formally or informally. Leaders were usually richer and more powerful than others, often being aristocrats. An example of an oligarchy government from the past is Sparta.
