National AssemblyThis is a featured page

It was established during the French Revolution and existed from June 17 to July 9 of 1789. It was a transitional body between the Estates-General and the National Constituent Assembly. The Estates-General had been called in May 1789, and when the Third Estate found out that they were not going to be represented fairly during the vote, they refused to participate, met separately, and called themselves the National Assembly. On the morning of June 20, deputies were shocked to discover the doors to their chamber locked and guarded. They were forced to meet in an indoor tennis court, and there they agreed on an oath that political authority would hence be derived from the people and not the monarch. Then, to rebel against the king's power, they stormed the Bastille.
