Muhammad was born around 570 C.E. into a prominent clan of the Quraysh tribe. For the first six years of his life, he spent it being raised by relatives in the Banu Hashim tribe. In his early 20's, he was working as a trader for Khadijah(whom he later married). With all the traveling he'd done, he had gained knowlege about other beliefs and practices that had greatly impacted him and led him into the the 610 or easlier where he received a revelation from the angel Gabriel. Later, the revelations that were collected were recorded into a book call the Quran. In 622, Ali, a person apart of his clan, risked his life for Muhammad to secure the safe passage between Mecca and Medina.
