Image:Michel de Montaigne 1.jpg(1533-1592) During his time of retirement, Montaigne created a new litereary form know as an "essay" or test of his innermost feelings. But his main influence was philosophical, inspiring the search for self-knowledge. Writers directly influenced by Montaigne include Descartes and Shakespeare. He's most famously known by his skeptical remark "Que sais-je?" ("What do I know?").
