Mansa Musa was a 14th century noble in the Mali Empire and a devout Muslim.
He approved of education and either sponsored or built several Mosques and gave large amounts of money to the Sankore University in Timbuktu. He also gave many people a free education at certain universities and guilds.

Mansa Musa

He underwent a large Hajj that disrupted North Africa's economy because of the massive amounts of money he gave away. This caused massive inflation that took North Africa over a decade to recover.

Mansa Musa gave away so much money to charity on his pilgrimage to Mecca that he was forced to take a loan for his return to Mali.
