King Philip II was born in Valladolid on May 21, 1527 and he was the only legitimate son of Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. He helped Spain reach its highest point but it also reached its limits under his rule. He conquered many lands then eventually lost them. He smothered Spanish intellectual life because of his belief in Roman Catholicism. He died in 1598 due to an unspecified type of cancer.
