José de San Martín

José de San Martín José de San Martín(1778-1850), also known as José Francisco de San Martín Matorras, was an Argentinian general who fought for South America's Independence from Spain in the early 19th century. Born in Argentina, he left to study in Madrid, Spain. He fought for the Spanish against the French. While in Spain, he started making contact with supporters of South American Independence. He returned to Argrntina in 1812, where he formed an army and began liberating South American countries like Argentina, Chile, and Peru. After a meeting with fellow libertador Simón Bolívar on July 22, 1822, he unexpectedly left to live in France, giving many historians a subject of depate as to what happened in the meeting. Regardless, he is considered a hero of South American independence.
