Jacques Cartier, a French explorer estalished France's claim on current day Canada through his exploration of the St. Lawerence river. Some histsorians believe that Jacques learned is navigating techniques from his days as a fisherman.

On another page, Jacques made his first documented exploration in 1534, his was sailing under the French flag. Jacques’s ships sailed around the northern tip of Newfoundland and along its western coast into the gulf of the St. Lawrence.
