The first Hijrah occurred in 615, Hijrah - Mr. Thomas' World History ClassAfter Muhammad became discouraged by the persecution of his followers, and by his failure of the Meccans to accept his message. He and some of his closest supporters left and moved north to Yathrib, later named Medina. This took place in 622, and it became one year in the official calendar of Islam.

The Prophet Mahammas's migration (ad 622) from Mecca to Medina in order to escape persecution, the date represents the starting point of the Muslim era.
