This is the fifth of the five pillars of Islam. All muslims are encouraged to make a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.
Hajj is practiced because Muhammad performed Hajj, but the ritual was already considered ancient during the time of Muhammad (7th century).
In 2007, about 200 million people made Hajj in the annual pilgrimage.
