Gran Colombia - Mr. Thomas' World History Class
Gran Colombia was what is now present day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. The term Colombia was used by Simon Bolivar regarding Spanish America, but was made the name of the new republic formed in 1819 at the Congress of Angostura. After the constitution of the new republic was enacted in 1821, the first president, Simon Bolivar, and his vice president, Fransisco de Paula Santander. In 1828-1829, it engaged in war with the Republic of Peru, resulting in Peru's surrender.The dissolution of Gran Colombia characterized the failure of Bolívar's dream, and resulted in its dicision into several Latin American countries.
