Gian Lorenzo Bernini - Mr. Thomas' World History Class pre-eminent Baroque sculptor and architect of 17th Century Rome. Born: December 7th 1598 Died: Novemer 28th 1680 Bernini was born in Naples to a Mannerist sculptor, Pierto Bernini, originally from Florence. At the age of seven he accompanied his father to Rome, where his father was involved in several high profile projects. There as a boy, his skill was soon noticed by the painter Annibale Carricci and by pope paul V , and Bernini gained the patronage exclusively under a Cardinal , the pope's nephew. His first works were inspired by antique greco sculptures. He eventually earned the satus of a master sculptor under the patronage of Cardinal Borghese. Bernini Made many fountains and marble busts in his life but he is most recognized for his sculptures. Some of his most Famous works are The rape of Persepina, and The ecstasy of st.
