The Dutch came and captured Portuguese's critical fort Malacca and built their own in 1620 at Batavia, Java. The Dutch Trading empire was made up of basic components that were similiar to the Portuguese: fortified towns and factories, warships on patrol, and monopoly control of a limited number of products. The Dutch learned that peaceful commerce was more profitable than forcible control.
