"The Dark Ages" refers to the early Middle Ages; this period lasted roughly between 476 AD to 1000 AD.As disorganization replaced advanced culture in the Dark Ages, Europe was set back by a plague, constant onslaught from the Northmen, persecution, famine, and a time period of war that was seemed endless. The Dark Ages were filled with people who fought to shape their future, from the warlords whose armies threatened to cause the downfall of European society, like Alaric, to the men and women who valiantly tended to the burning fire of justice, innovation, and knowledge, including Charlemagne, St. Benedict, and Empress Theodora. The overwhelming problem, however, was the lack of connection. When the Roman Empire controlled nearly all of the known world, there was a presence of civilization throughout. After the fall of the unifying state, people were left to swear allegiance to local monarchs and nobles lacking the traits of a centralized government. Dark Ages - Mr. Thomas' World History Class
