A conquistador was a Spanish soldier, explorer, and adventurer who took part in the westernization of the New World. As the conquistadors discovered the New World they started to change how the people in the New World lived. The first people that started to colonize the Americas was the Spanish and the Portuguese. These explorers first came to Latin America and later to North America. The conquistadors thrived on conquest to the New World, and because of this they made exploration and colonization their lives and tried to find new land for their country and themselves. When the conquistadors arrived to the New World they did not know what to expect. What they came to find was that there were already inhabitants on these lands. As the conquistadors arrived to the New World they decided that they were going to attempt to colonize it, even though the natives were already there. Conquistadors like Francisco Pizarro, Pedro Cieza de Leon, Hernan Cortes, Francisco Vazquez de Coronado, and Pedro de Valdivia made it possible for colonization to begin. Projectile weapons and steel blades directly aided the conquistadors in their conquest. An indirect aid was the arrival of diseases such as smallpox. Diseases wiped out a good portion if not the majority of the native population.
