Columbus, although Italian, sailed in Spain's name. He was looking for a short cut to Asia and (accidentally) landed upon the coastline of Cuba in October of 1492. Since he thought that he had made port in Asia, he called the natives "Indians," mistaking them for the native peoples of India.
