BreadThis is a featured page

Bread was a main staple of French life before the French Revolution. A French family of four needed approximately two loaves of bread per day to survive. There was a crop failure of grain in 1788 and 1789. This, coupled with Louis XVI's bad money managing, led many French people to go hungry. Lack of bread was one of the main reasons the peasants disliked Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette because the young king and queen threw away more food in one day than many peasants saw in a week. This dislike quickly grew to hate when propaganda was spread that Marie Antoinette, upon hearing the difficulties of her countrymen, supposedly said, "They have no bread? Then let them eat cake." The peasants' troubles finally spurred them into action, helping to cause the French Revolution.Bread - Mr. Thomas' World History Class
