Battle of ActiumThis is a featured page

The Battle of Actium was a Roman battle between Octavian (Augustus) on one side and Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, on the other.
The Battle of Actium was the decisive engagement in the Final War of the Roman Republic between the forces of Octavian and those of Mark Anthony. It was fought on September 2, 31 BC, on the Ionian Sea near the Roman colony of Actium in Greece. Octavian's fleet was commanded by Marcus Vipsanus Agrippa, while Antony's fleet was supported by the fleet of his lover, Cleopatra VII, queen of Ptolemaic Egypt.
Augustus won the battle by luring Antony's fleet away from the protection of the bay, and Cleopatra's fleet left the area. Once Mark Anthony's fleet was in more open water and without Cleopatra's aid, it was quickly attacked and destroyed by Augustus' fleet.
